Oil on canvas is where everything slows down. There is no undo, no layers panel, no shortcut. Every decision stays on the surface and either works or it does not.

The paintings here cover a lot of ground: sports figures, portraiture, Croatian Adriatic seascapes, and New York subjects. What connects them is the process. Each one is observed, composed, and built up in paint by hand. Joe trained at Parsons and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts, and has been teaching oil painting at the Roslyn School of Painting for over 20 years. The approach is rooted in traditional technique without being precious about it.

The sports paintings come from the same place as the toons and sports logos: a real fan's relationship with these teams, these players, and these moments. Growing up near Shea Stadium and Nassau Coliseum has a way of leaving a mark, and some of that ends up on canvas. The rest of it ends up in therapy. Art is cheaper.

The seascape work draws directly from time spent on the Croatian coast, where the light on the Adriatic does things that are genuinely difficult to explain and only slightly easier to paint.
